For exhibition only, why price and value aren't the same thing

“FOR EXHIBITION ONLY.”
Have you ever seen that sign inside a Rolex boutique?
Fifteen years ago, that would’ve felt strange.
Back then, you could walk into a Rolex store and be fairly confident you were going to at least leave with something.
Today, that’s often not the case.
You can have all the money ready, in hand and still not be able to buy the model you want.
Porsche works similarly with the 911.
Walk into Ferrari expecting to buy an SF90 and they may think you’re joking.
That’s because luxury markets have changed.
MSRP is only one layer.
Scarcity matters.
Desirability matters.
Exclusivity matters.
Relationships matter.
And so does what buyers are willing to pay on the secondary market.
That’s why a Rolex with a $15,000 retail price can trade for 2 or 3x MSRP, while another watch that originally retailed for $75,000 can sell for less.
Price is easy to find.
Understanding value takes context.
